Moving SL to protect profits in a trade

Good evening TFG,

What are your thoughts on moving Stop Losses levels when in a trade?
I was in a profitable AUD JPY trade yesterday (2013-04-19) and when I was about 100 pips in profit,
I moved my SL level at 50 pips to protect my position. But then, given the volatility of the pair,
I got stopped out. I'm guessing this would have something to do with a pair's attributes
with JPY pairs having a wider daily range compared to other pairs.

Rules of thumb based on your experience will be helpful.
