It's not as straight forward as MT4 to get history. The easiest way is to use indicators which "demand" data from a certain date period, which kicks MT5 into downloading.
But you don't need really need an indicator to identify swing lows and highs, they are the easier things to spot on the chart.
Don't rely on indicators to do this for you, or you will never become a master chart reader.

The solution for you would be a MT4 VPS... run the trade panel in the cloud on your account. Then you can turn your computer off and the panel will be doing it's work 24/7.
